This school is a gift
First season: September 2026–March 2027
MIC, Buckfastleigh, Devon
Currently seeking speakers and donations
Edge School is a series of monthly talks with dinner, where we’ll think with and learn from our neighbours. This is a culture-growing and wisdom-sharing experiment, in which all tickets will be offered as a gift. Anyone who is hungry for culture and connection is warmly welcome.
All around South Devon, there are people in studios and workshops and barns and fields and bedroom-offices and their own beautiful minds, exploring vital questions and ideas. Lighting themselves up with craft and investigations and nerdery that can help us live in these edgy times. And the rest of us want—*need*—to know about it.
Once a month, we’ll gather to hear about one of these investigations. Then we’ll share dinner and have a whole-group discussion.
You are invited to come and be nourished by hearty ideas, hearty food, and hearty neighbouring.
Seeking speakers
I’m seeking speakers now for gatherings running September 2026–March 2027. You might be an artist, academic, poet, scientist, rite-of-passage guide, activist, actor, neighbour, friend, any combination of these things, or something else entirely. You don’t need a degree in your topic! Just an idea that’s asking to be shared.
The format of each evening will be:
A 45-minute screen-free talk from the speaker
A shared dinner
A community-wide discussion (45 mins to an hour)
Would you like to investigate your current idea or question in this community space? Some guiding questions:
⚡Which idea or investigation is lighting you up right now, which might help us rise to these edgy times?
⚡Which idea would you like to share as a gift?
⚡Which questions are you living? Which questions do you long to explore with others?⚡
All speakers will be paid £150, and will be invited to share a hearty dinner with guests. I’m taking expressions of interest until 17th July 2026. Please send ideas and friendly hellos to: hello.edge.school@gmail.com.
Seeking donations
Nobody will pay to come to Edge School. These evenings are offered as a gift whose value won’t be measured in money.
Edge School is founded on the belief that a market economy of neat exchanges does not grow a living culture. Living cultures are grown by acts of generosity. They are sustained when people become willing to receive a gift and be changed by it, then somewhere along the line, find a way to pass it on.
I’m seeking financial support of £1,750 (£250 per event for seven events) for this culture-building, wisdom-sharing initiative. Each £250 will go towards:
Space hire: £100
Speaker fee: £150
I will source and cook dinner as a personal gift to speakers and guests. None of the money raised will go to me; it will all be passed along to speakers (i.e. it will help to sustain activists, artists, and thinkers) and pay for the rental of a space that is in turn devoted to community-building and the arts.
If and when I have raised £1,750, I will turn donations off.
You can support this project by donating at GoFundMe.
